Moby-Dick or, The Whale (6P)
Details
"Call me Ishmael." So echo the famous opening lines of this American classic about the maniacal pursuit of the white whale. Every student should come aboard the Pequod on the voyage. But beware of Captain Ahab! The renowned theologian, R.C. Sproul, has described Moby Dick as the great American novel. Written in 1851, on this incredible story Melville writes the chronicle of a vengeful captain's obsessive, self-destructive search for a white whale. R.C. tells us that one of Melville's parents was a Calvinist and the other was a Unitarian. This religious conflict in his upbringing certainly poured out into his personal responses in the characters in his book. A great read and one that will make you think through your own theology.
